Founders: Elder Mance & Sister Ethel Buchanon

On Thursday, April 23, 1964, a meeting was held by the saints of God in the home of Elder & Sister Mance Buchanon for the purpose of establishing a new church. Listed among the saints were the Buchanon Family, the Smith Family, the Amos Family, Deacon Sam Wilson, Mother Idella Wilson, the Brown children, the Lewis Family, and many others.

On April 26, 1964, the first service of Shiloh Church of God in Christ was held in the home of Elder Buchanon. During that time, the first Trustee Board was also established. The first official business meeting was held on May 28, 1964, and the official paperwork was notarized in Sacramento on May 29th. This made Shiloh Church of God in Christ an official Incorporated Association.

With God’s Blessing, the dedication and groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 10, 1964. The foundation was laid, and “day by day, the walls went up.” Upon laying the final brick, Elder Buchanon prayed the prayer “ . . . That this Church Be a Soul-Saving Station . . .”

Sunday, May 16, 1965 . . . seven months later, the first service was held in the new building. The building was officially dedicated on Sunday, April 25, 1966 by Elder Harvey Jessie of San Diego, California.

Elder Mance Buchanon was called home by the Lord on December 5, 1992. Elder Edward T. Taylor, Sr. was installed as Pastor on April 8, 1993 and was called home by the Lord on September 22, 1993.

Under the guidance of the Lord, Bishop Charles E. Blake, Jurisdictional Prelate of the First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Southern California, Church of God in Christ, installed Elder Herbert G. Hurd as Pastor of Shiloh Church of God in Christ in 1993.

Under Elder Herbert G. Hurd, Shiloh Church of God in Christ recovered and recouped trials and continued to be a church “On the move for God.” Elder Herbert G. Hurd was called home to be with the Lord in January of 1998.

Bishop Charles E. Blake, under the leading of the Holy Spirit, sent Elder Michael N. Henderson, of Los Angeles, California, to serve as Interim Pastor for the Shiloh Church congregation. Elder Henderson served as Interim Pastor from February 1998 to April 1998. He was officially appointed as Senior Pastor on April 23, 1998. Pastor Henderson and his lovely wife, Sister Angela Henderson, have labored faithfully and diligently since that time.

Shiloh Church has continued to grow both spiritually and numerically under the visionary leadership of Elder / Dr. Michael N. Henderson. Several new ministries have been added while under his pastoral care such as Greeters, Sound & Media, Altar Workers, Follow-up, Missions & Outreach Ministries, Small Groups Ministry, School of Ministry & Leadership, Academic Tutorial, and a Community Development Corporation.

From 1999 to 2002, Shiloh Church held its Sunday Morning Worship Services at the Martin Luther King Middle School Auditorium. This was largely due to the rapid growth the congregation had experienced. The M.L.K Auditorium allowed Shiloh the opportunity to continue its growth, as well as provided additional classroom space for the expansion of Sunday School and Nursery/ Children’s Ministries. Sunday Morning Service was held at M.L.K. Middle School, while utilizing the 1517 Dubuque Street facility for Sunday Night and Mid-Week Service.

Near the closing of 2002, the Lord began to burden Elder Henderson’s heart for the community surrounding the original sanctuary. And so, under the leading of the Holy Spirit, services were relocated back to the original location, implementing an additional morning service to accommodate its rapidly growing congregation. Shiloh has become a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, biblically based ministry, reaching the community and world with the love of Jesus Christ. It is international in its efforts to evangelize the lost, extending its evangelistic efforts into Africa, Mexico and Brazil.

On November 6th, 2016 Pastor Henderson, sensing the prompting of the Holy Spirit announced that he would be leaving at the end of the year. On February 3rd, 2017, Bishop Joe L. Ealy appointed Elder George Bailey as Elder in Charge for the period of one year. During this time, Shiloh Church continued on strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. On March 3rd, 2018, Bishop Ealy installed Elder George Bailey as the Senior Pastor of Shiloh Church of God in Christ.

Since being installed as Senior Pastor, Pastor Bailey has implemented a rigid Discipleship Training Program to help the people of God grow closer to the Lord and become better laborers in the vineyard. He has also implemented a weekly Prayer Ministry that prays each week and labors in prayer for those in need. Shiloh seeks opportunities to serve our community and to show appreciation for our local law enforcement agencies, as well as the military. Shiloh has also partnered with Africa Thriving, a mission in Risa, Kenya and is helping to spread the Gospel into all the world. Shiloh has added more opportunities to serve and conduct local missions and outreach within our own community by conducting monthly food distribution in our Eastside community and to the local Indian tribe at Mesa Grande. Pastor Bailey has also begun numerous renovation projects for our Church, which has been in existence for over 55 years. His desire is to reach the community of Oceanside for Jesus!

As God continues to mold his people and refine them, so the church members continue to work to build God’s kingdom. During the past fifty years, many have been Saved, Delivered, Healed, Baptized in water, and Baptized in the Holy Spirit, never to return to their former state. We look forward to the next fifty years, believing God for all He has promised.
